Do You Have Any Questions For Us?

This question is one of the most dreaded interview questions (next to the one on strengths and weaknesses)!

Effective Interviews will have a Structure

Most interviewers’ last question will be to ask if the interviewee has any questions they would like to ask them.

At this point of the interview, the interviewee is often tired, curious if they’re doing well and their energy may be lagging.  Questions that were prepared in advance have often been answered during the course of the interview and there can be a sense of panic felt when the interviewee is asked “do you have any questions for us?”

Typical Questions People Ask

There are typical questions interviewees ask prospective employers at the end of their interview.

Interviewees have a habit of asking questions about the benefits of the job, or how soon they’re likely to hear back after the interview, that type of question.  However, these questions don’t lend to a lengthy or useful answer.

There is a Missed Opportunity Here.

  • Ask the interviewer about the job itself
  • Ask the interviewer about how a typical day or week or month in the job.  Find out what the actual day to day will be like.  By asking an open question, you will hear so much more about what the job will actually involve and not just the contents of the job description.
  • Ask the interviewer about the culture and values in the organisation.
  • Ask the interviewer what they love the most about working in the organisation.  This is where you will get very useful information both from their verbal communication and also their non-verbal cues.  Keep an eye on both in their answer!
  • Ask the interviewer what is their preferred work approach of the successful candidate.  This will give you tangible information as to the work environment being proposed.  Again, notice their body language in their answer.

The Interviewer has a Great Opportunity here to give you Useful Information about the Job Itself

If they are brief in their answer, it can mean that they aren’t entirely engaged in the interview and perhaps don’t see you as a potential hire.  If they are free with their time and information, it can give you an insight into their management style and how much time they will give you in the job itself.

Make use of this final question “Do You Have Any Questions for Us” and make sure you are pursuing the right job and work culture for you!
